Canada's government will fund more than $100M in new initiatives as part of its ecoTransport Strategy, a series of initiatives designed to reduce the environmental impacts of transportation in Canada.
New initiatives under the ecoTransport Strategy include:
- The ecoMobility program, which spends up to $10M working with municipalities to help cut urban-passenger transportation emissions and develop programs, services and products for urban areas.
- The ecoTechnology for Vehicles Program and the ecoENERGY for Personal Vehicles Program includes up to $36M in funding for testing and promoting environmentally-friendly vehicle technologies, building partnerships with the automotive industry and providing fuel consumption information and decision-making tools to encourage consumer purchases of fuel-efficient vehicles available in the market.
- The ecoFreight initiatives, totaling up to $61M, offer new steps to reduce the environmental and health effects of freight transportation through accelerated adoption of emissions-reducing technology.
"Canada's new government is taking action to deliver real reductions in air pollutants, greenhouse gas emissions and harmful substances in our communities," said Canada's Minister of the Environment, John Baird.
"We will continue to work with provincial, territorial and municipal governments, as well as with the broader transportation community, to develop a practical, cost-effective approach to protecting the environment so that present and future generations of Canadians benefit from a country that is cleaner, greener and healthier."
